Making Good African Movies Great

Contribution: I have suggestions for African movie makers to make movies that will appeal to a broader audience

and help them gain recognition as producers of great movies. Note that my exposure to African movies is limited to movies made in Nigeria, Ghana, and Senegal (in sequence according to the number of each country’s movie I have watched).

Movies are just a way to tell a story. If the story is well told, the content has limited importance. A perfect example of successful story telling with limited content is the Seinfeld TV series. Seinfeld could develop an absorbing story based on a mundane situation, by skillfully dissecting it and exaggerating its importance to the limit of our willingness to believe. Reaching the limit without exceeding it is an important part of telling a good story. Audiences will forgive a poorly told story if the ending is satisfactory.

I have these suggestions for African movie makers:

1. At least some of the movies should have a happy ending.
2. A story should be believable.
3. Bad characters should reveal at least one good quality in the story so the audience cares about that character. The good characters can also reveal some imperfection. It is fact of life that good and bad behaviors are common to all mankind. Thus the saying, “There is a little good in the worst of us and a little bad in the best of us.”
4. Do not confuse humor with comedy. A serious story can have light and funny moments without detracting from its serious content.
5. A story should have an “aha” moment where some lesson has been learned. The lesson can be aimed at the audience or simply at one of the main characters in the movie. American movie audiences have learned to expect a lesson.
6. Do not kill off too many people in a single movie. Save at least one character that we as an audience can identify with and who can benefit from the lesson told on the movie. Nigerian movies in particular tend to resemble a Shakespearian tragedy, with the full cast dead on the floor at the final curtain. Drama does not need to be tragic to be effective.
7. When the story is unique to a particular culture, outside audiences will appreciate a narrative that describes the situation and gives them some insight into why they should be interested in the story’s characters.
8. Do not mix too many stories into one big story. Too many digressions wreck the structure of your main story.
9. Offer your movie in multiple languages by using modern dubbing techniques with a menu selection to choose English, French, Spanish, or any of your favorite local languages.

Watching African movies has often reminded me of the critiques Samuel Clemens (pen name Mark Twain, an American author and humorist) made of James Fenimore Cooper’s popular novel “Deerslayer.” based on his rules for telling a story well. His advice is just as relevant for movie makers now as it was when he wrote it, and if applied will make good African movies great.
